Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

How to light this one up?

Hey everyone,

If you have some time and you could give me any tips or suggestions on how to achieve this kind of light you would help me a lot! I'm still a beginner when it comes to lighting but well... learning by doing. user added image

So I have this background picture:

and this scene:

The house is going to be photoshopped into that picture. But before that of course I need to create the basic light/atmosphere. The light you see in that render comes from that background pic, which I used with the Image based lighting option + Final Gathering and Global illumination (default settings). How would you approach this? user added image

Im fairly new to lighting as well, first thing i would do though is try and find an hdri image similar to that lighting set up. Check cgitextures.com they have some pretty good ones and royalty free. This will give you similar reflections.

This will be quite the undertaking for someone new to lighting since Maya's rendering can become quite convoluted, especially in the case of sky+clouds. Are you experienced with compositing? MasterZap did a blog post about adding clouds to the mental ray physical sky and Ash made one that's the Maya version. With some experimenting, I've expanding on this for my workflow and should probably do a post as well!

Yeah the lighting I want to achieve is rather unnatural if you ask me - almost like there were two suns in the scene. But thanks a lot Gen, I'm gonna try master zap's tut! Need to get this done by Thursday. user added image
