Tutorial for animated ocean

I'm looking for a tutorial on animating a surface to mimic an ocean surface.

i uploaded an ocean shader not too long ago here on SM, so u can use it.
1)create a NURBS plane option box (name this plane oceanPlane)
>width = 40
>length = 40
>patches U and V = 30
2)convert the NURBS plane into a Softbody
- press f4 to get in the dynamics mode
>soft/Rigid body dropdown menu
>create soft body option box
>creation option = duplicate, Make original soft
>uncheck duplicate input graph
>weight = .30
Ok ocean plane is now created. now to make it move like one.
1)go to your outliner and select the oceanPlane, click on the + next to it to reveal the particles
2)select the particles
3)while still in the dynamic mode (f4) and oceanParticle still selected
>Fields
>turbulence > name it ocean Turbulence
>set magnitude to 7
>attenuation to .4
>frequency to 4
>noise ratio to 1
> interpolation type to quadratic (this is not in the option menu, after u hit create , it's in the last option in the turbulence field menu on the right)
Ok, going a bit further, u can create an air field for more realism
1)select the oceanParticles again
>field
>air option box
>magnitude = 3
attenuation = .7
direction xyz = .8, 1, .3
spread to .7
everything else is default.

i got good results, but u can always modufy magnitude, attenuation etc to get ur desired results.

Vlad,
I notice the ocean shader is inside a Maya scene (.mb). How do I save that as a shader (.ma)?

u don't have to save as .ma
simply import it and it will go directly to the hypershade.

if you're using 4.5 then y not just use the ocean creator thingy. the results are fantastic. but I'm sure this way will work too user added image

yea... i thought it's good practice to make from scratch that's all.user added image

It's always good to know both ways. I still have to figure out how to set it up with the presets. I guess there's probably a basic explanation in the manual/user info.

Actually, if I remember correctly, creating the ocean by converting a plane to softies is less of a drain on the pc than maya's ocean presets. I could be wrong though...it's been awhile. user added image

ur right, plus u have more control over animation, adding particles and fx etc...

All the better I have Vlad's tutorial.

By the way, I did your tutorial last night and it worked great. The only thing I'm having a hard time with is the shader. I haven't rendered a full animation yet, but a single frame looks kinda weird. I'll render an animation sequence before worrying too much.

maybe if u add better lighting!!
here are some lights.
delete whatever light u have in your scene and add import this file. it should provide good lighting.
