projecting textures from side

hey everyone,
i am trying to project a ramp texture onto a landscape-y surface so that it kinda has the illusion of mountaintops and stuff like that. the problem i'm having is that i can't seem to figure out how to project the texture from the side rathe than from the top. i've tried selecting the placement node and using the manipulator tool, tried using the 'interactive placement' thingy on the 2d manipulator node, but neither of these work. does anyone have any suggestions as to how to rotate the placement?

thanks

edit: doh, i figured it out, gotta select faces before you project a texture...user added image
