chucking rocks around

Hi again user added image

I am making a large desert plain and i want to scatter small random stones across the surface.

i tried the maya paint effects tool but this was waaaay to tedious and small to cover the area i wanted.

is there like a 'scatter' effect i can use?

or perhaps something to create a stack of stones as a particle system, then drop them onto the surface?
it's a poly surface and has hills etc, so a flat drop wouldn't work.

any ideas?

thanks!!'

Adam.
