heat distortion?

hey chaps and lady chaps....

whats the best way to acheive the distortion that extreme heat from jet engines causes to air?

PS: Direction to a tutorial would be wonderful. As well as Maya, my main apps for post are Combustion and AE 6.5

render out some particles as blobby objects or clouds and then use that to affect the backplate in your comp in combustion (Make sure you mask out your geometry first though so that it affects the alpha channel). Then use one of the channels from the particle render to distort the bakplate. That's basically how we did it on Thunderbirds for all of the effects from the ship's engines.
