Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

What is the difference bet smooth and subdiv mode?

Hi,

I am restarting again from a poly cube and I split and get the basic shape then I convert it to subdivision, but I don't understand why is it that everytime I do that, it looks so choppy.
And if I do the same from the basic shape and convert it to smooth, it looks fine.

Is it better to work using subdiv or smooth ? OR after converting the basic shape to subdiv, the choppiness can still be corrected?

Please let me know.user added image

well it's not a good idea to model with smooth..
but when you turn to subd hit the "3" key like you do with nurbs surfaces.. it smoothens it up..
is that what you wanted..? hope it helped.. :p

I normally always model with smooth and convert to Sub-D and touch up just to finalize the image... just my way, I suppose. user added image
