The transparent mid-section seems it should have something in it; engine, structural support, something?

Yes, maybe some window braces or something. Something like bars running down the windows, and if you want to keep the inside of the ship nice and clean, then I guess you could just put it on the outside of the windows. But I agree with mhcannon. It does seem a little bare on the inside, reminds me of a jellyfish. Hmm, cool concept though.
