This course will look at the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. We'll look at what makes a good model in Maya and why objects are modeled in the way they are.

help with modeling

i am making an ak47 i used image plane and use create polygon tool and extruded the faces so it is flat - which is the problem - how do i give it some curves e.g. the handles edges r rounder off how do i do this. i have tried smooth poly but this just makes it worse

help please

extrude more faces, cut/split polys.

The basis is the extrude cut and split faces as matt 4068 said.
You might also try creating different parts of your model separetly still using the cut/split and extrude and then using Polygons->Booleans->Union to add them all together. Also note that under Polygons->Booleans are Difference and Intersect which are also very usefull tools for modelling just create some poly boxes and try them.

Only one problem make note that after you do a boolean operation you may have excess edges and verts so you will probable have to go in and delete or merge them. If you want a vert to stay still whilein the merge get the vert you want gotten rid of select and hold the v key to snap it to the vert you want to stay still.
