Maya for 3D Printing - Rapid Prototyping
In this course we're going to look at something a little different, creating technically accurate 3D printed parts.

seing as the competition is closed I thought a little play with this model might be at hand user added image
I've decided to keep it fairly low poly as already suggested. Maybe a high poly would be nice to create some normal maps from at a later date.

Just simplified some of the geometry, added a more detailed engine and joined all the bits together. weighing in at around 1450 tris so far.

hey, nice work.
though i am not sure what a Ywing is (i am assuming it's from star wars); i like the job you've done at modeling.
are there any moving parts? will you be animating it? would be nice to see...user added image

cheers nalufein user added image after the challenge I'm feeling a bit more confident about texturing this baby

thanks utpal user added image
here's a reference shot of a y wing model (I think one of the originals from the star wars films). It's a single pilot bomber, a little bigger than an x wing fighter but a lot slower moving. Generally used to attack the bigger capital ships (can't guess I played the x wing and x wing vs tie fighter games when they were out user added image )
Some have a turret just above and behind the cockpit which could be animated, but not much else moves unfortunately. Maybe when I put the astromech droid in his head could spin around user added image

Yeah! Fresh from the challenge and ready to rock! Thats what I like to see. Now I'm feeling guilty for not firing up Maya yet todayuser added image

Your model is lookin' pretty tight. I would be interested to see you create a high rez version for normal mapping.

Cheers, dude!

You wouldn't mind uploading the Y-wing in the download section after it's complete?

hehe definately dave, its either modelling or playing games and I've purposely not got any games on my laptop at the minute user added image
I'm not sure how to do the normal mapping. I might even study what colours are set when a normal map is created and actually have a go at drawing them in (saves on the modelling time if it'll work). Thing is as soon as the new challenge comes out this model will sit for another 2 months user added image

Definately THX1138, then you'll be able to see all the shortcuts in the body geometry i've used (some +4sided polys in there I can tell you). When I get the texture done that'll be uploaded too user added image

well, i've experimented with automatic mapping for the UV's on this model. It actually worked fairly well but is a little time consuming (hence the delayed postings)
here's the UVmap (2 512x512 maps together) ready for texturing.

not much to show yet, still blocking in the basic colours/areas.
