question about converting to polygons

in the free tutorial dog modeling thing.. he chooses the neck then press enter..a puprle lines come over the neck..then goes to the head and do the same thing..then union..
for me..enter didnt work. so i cant convert them proprely
what can i do?

Maybe try "Y"... should work taht way!
