noob question

i am a total noob.i just recently got maya 7.i downloaded the video on here to make the cartoon dog.in the first part of the video about 5 min through the guy is shaping the dogs head.he shapes the sphere into the shape of the dogs head.when i try to shape the head it never works like the video.only a small triangle shape gets pulled from the sphere.when he does it one side of the whole sphere moves and is rounded.
kinda hard to explain.any help?

Are u using a nurbs sphere or a poly sphere.

I thing u have the level of smothness to display low poly for nurbs. Hit the hotkey 3, i think to get it smoothed.

u might need to change the merge verts settings and make the number in the tools options have a bigger distance so it will do them wen further away
