Maya emergency

For no apperent reason any time I move an edge or vertex on an object and the object is symetrical, it moves the oppisite edge or vertex that I don't want to move. this never happened before. I've tried reseting the preferences. It doesn't make any sense. Somebody please help! Until I fix this I can't enven really do any modeling!

Thanks

when u drag select you select all points that fall in that catigory even if they on the other side of the object, iv u are looking form the x- axis and select over a point in a syemtrical object all points behind and in frount of it wil be selected too, i can select a single point by clicking once on it and not draging over it, to select mor than one point this way hold shift... ok just watch the turotial it couse with it

That's not the problem. I am only graping one point and it is moving the other. The problem is being mirrored over the ZY plane.
