Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

Smoothing without smooth

Hello everyone
I want to smooth an object, without the smooth command. Because when I use that i get this:
https://img261.imageshack.us/img261/427/da1zz4.png (before)
https://img329.imageshack.us/img329/6836/da2pi7.png (after)

I want the lines all fluent and stuff but I don't want it to get ugly, with the shades and stuff. If you don't understand me or have further questions just reply.

Edit: I forgot this: how do you make holes in an object like on this picture: https://www.kuttersknives.com/product_images/kr_22.jpg

Greetings Brecht

answer for number 1: i think i would change your subdivisions value higher for a smoother result. your blade consisted of a measly 18 or so polys... it won't look smooth til you have many more.

answer for number 2: boolean. create the shape (using a cylinder, etc) that you want to take out of your blade, and then do a subtract. (i'd do that before the smooth, but that's just me.)

Accept no substitutions.

The thing I was actually looking for was "keep hard edges", but I'm still doing your tips.
