rayman model

Hi:
I am a University student who is having extreme difficulty attempting to model Rayman for my Facial Animation module. The idea is, like in the 10 Second Animation Club, to model a character and have it say the lines from a film. I have my film quote: but i have tried so many times to model Rayman it's getting tedious and I am frustrated with it. Please offer me some guidance. Any BASIC tutorials, crits, ANYTHING to help me out. Thanks. I've uploaded screen shots of where I've got up to.

i think you would have more success starting with poly spheres, honestly. i would consider the primary shape of rayman as nothing but regular primitives, just deformed with a lattice or using face/vertex manipulation.
