Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

Simple Moon/Earth Image on Sphere

Hey Everyone,

I am an extremely new person to maya so this may be a very easy question.

I have a sphere and a JPEG/GIF of the moon. I want to apply the picture of the moon to the sphere for my scene. The problem is, the picture of moon is square and there is space between the moon itself and the edges of the picture. When I apply the image to the hypershade, the edges show up and it doesn't look right.

I hope this makes sense. I'm not sure what I need to do to get just the "moon" on the sphere and not everything else.

Correct me if im wrong but it seems to me that you have a photo of the moon as opposed to a texture ready image.

You could spend time in photoshop with the image you have or you could locate an unwrapped (so to speak) image of the moon. I think the Nasa sites has some links.

I enclose one just in case.

SM guys: Apologies in advance if image too big.

Hello Chris,

MayaPadwan is right, you need a spherical texture to connect to your shader node. This Link will take you to a site that has texture and bump maps for all of the planets in the solar system whixh you can freely download (there are higher res ones there too if you are willing to pay).

Hope you find this helpful.

Good luck,

Mat.
