Make sure the light is a point light. U use point lights for lamps, candles etc. And make sure the light doesnt influence anything else. Look up "light linking" in Maya help to further understand this concept. Make sure you unlink this light from every object in the scene. Use spot lights to light your scene properly all around until you get the look you want.

Here is something cool you can test out! Go to the attributes of the point light. Go to Light Effects>light Glow and click on the checkered button to the right. It will create and opticalFX node and it will take you to a new menu.

Set:
glow type: Linear
Halo Type: Linear

You can mess with all these attributes to your preference.

Go to the point light main atts. and set the intensity brightness until you get what you want.

This creates realistic optical effects for your light. It will make your scene stand out. Goodluck!
