Complex UV Layout in Maya
Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

mentalray Final Gather problem

Please help.

I must have something very basic very wrong.
I have tried 5 different tutorials - always the same problem.
It is all black or almost all black.
I am using Maya 8.5

I am trying to light my scene by using an hdr on a half sphere which is over the entire scene.

My result:

My render settings: user added image

My shader with the hdr:

My sphere (that has the shader with the hdr):

PS: I am not wanting to use the hdr in the environment tab because I want it to effect a finite area.

Thanks in advance!

You need to map your color through your Ambient channel.

In the hypershade, Middle mouse mutton and drag the Ramp/Image/Color Node That you are using for the color of the environment (the one you have in the color channel of the Environment Node), and drop it on the Environment Node. Then click on the 'Ambient' Option.

That should do it.

"Yes."

Is this what you are telling me?

I think that I still must be misunderstanding something very basic?
