well, there are ways to move points in respect to the U, V, and normal of a face. But otherwise, usually, you end up with non-planar faces (I think the fact that they are non-planar supposedly helps, although I mostly do machine work). And I wouldn't try moving them to become planar later - if they need to be planar, tesselate them.
