I think most people would agree that music is pretty handy for that.

music is so ftw for that.

Generally, good shorts will be simple. And like alot of good stories have a strong sense of empathy, before you come up with characters come up with a premise.

Think of basic themes that the piece could be about, theft, loss, love, embarassment.

Its a pretty big topic.

Well that's sort of a gray area as it really depends on personal taste.

It really isnt a linier process, just have to let go and think.

Listen to music and think of things taht come to your mind, i used to do abstract broad paintings to try and find shapes that put ideas in my head.

Its a good idea to disconnect yourself somewhat, your ideas are influenced from what kind of things you see and read day in day out, so innitial ideas tend to be cliched, thats why music and abstract things are good. Watch films you wouldnt usually watch, art you dont usually like.

Doing that usually makes me fall asleep...

I prefer listening to "powerful" music for inspiration. What is defined as "powerful" depends on personal taste, so its up to you, but I find that classical music works for me. It you want to give it a try, I recommend "Mars" and maybe "Jupiter" from The Planets by Gustav Holst.

C. P. U. Its not a big processor... Its a series of pipes!
