help - extruding faces problem ?

hey fellas can anyone help me with how i can stop this when i switch to sub'ds or smooth a polygon ? :

under the polygon menu tick the tool options -> keep faces together.

there's a tools option for it? I seem to have always overlooked it. I always replace the word "off" with "on" in the keep faces together box in the channel window (or whatever it's called) on the right after i have extruded.
