Model a rock

Im at Animation Mentor and my current assignment is the typical 'pole hop' assignment. No,...surely you havent seen this before? lol However I want my pole to be rock pillars.

Ok I suck at modelling!

Can anyone advise me the best way to model these.

With (eventually) nice level of detail ni there for renders?
I tried but obviously when i smooth, it smooths and i want high level of detail but appear very jagged

Thank you
