help with hair settings

Hi

I am pretty new to maya - I can sort of crawl, my way around it but I never completely feel comfortable inits environment but I need to use it for something I would like to do with hair. Actually I have some example I would like to replicate, but I can't get the settings to reproduce what I want...it's close but not close enough. I want to make the look of wool threads which gather together as they are given slack and are dipped in water (an old architectural experiment) and I know that a good part of it is using a negative repulsion factor under the collisions...but I am just not getting the smooth behaviour I have seen elsewhere..as in at www.shampooo.net

I am wondering if anyone is willing to prepare a quick recipe, or at least provide tips on how i might achieve this. I am only really interested in the spline, and not producing the look of hair.

i appreciate any advice!
thanks
