Joint Orientations

Hi!

I am at the chapter "Skeleton" at my maya book now and I am wondering what about this joint orientation??? I just don't understand what actually IS a good orientation for the joints? The book says that I should bring every joint into the right orientation using component mode and this question mark.. fine... but what is a good orientation? I don't understand why I need this anyway. I hope you can bring light about this into the gloomy room user added image

Thanks.
