Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 2
This course will look in the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. It's aimed at people that have some modeling experience in Maya but are having trouble with complex objects.

I probably spent around 10 hours on it so far. I'm not rushing it so it's taking me a while to get things done. I actually haven't touched it in two days. Work sometimes gets too much of my time. Thanks for the compliment. I don't know if I'll have any updates soon, but the next thing I am working on is the chestplate that goes over the shirt. Oh, one other thing, I ditched the color on the model, too distracting. Everything is now blinn shaded white.

I'll post something soon I hope. Good day.

Chad

OK peeps, I've added about 10 pics to my site showcasing this lovely lady I'm modeling. I've ditched the shoulder pad idea because once I modeled it, I thought it looked too top heavy for the character. Anyway, here are some shots. Enjoy.

EDIT:

I've got most of the nuncloth finished. I know it's symetrical right now, but I will work on that after the model is completed. I also haven't really figured out how I am going to attach the cloth to the crown. Anyway, judge for yourself. Give me some crits.

I'm surprised I haven't gotten much comments on this thread. I guess it's because I'm new. Anyway, I finished the nun cloth thingy and finished her pants and boots. I modeled the gloves yesterday, but they turned out so bad I trashed them and am looking for a good tut on modeling hands. Here are the latest pics, enjoy.

PS: Critiques more than welcome.

Very nice work. I was just thinking would it look better if you:
- place the eyes lower and closer to each other
- place the mouth a bit upper
- widen the top of the nose and bring it a little out

Just my $0.02...

Thanks for the comments guys. I wasn't too sure what I didn't like about the head either. I'm not going for human photorealism, but something still looked funny. So, thanks for the ideas kbrown. I've updated the head, by what you've suggested and here is what it looks like now.

Better...

I'm not a master at human(ish) anatomy but I think you still need to do the same things I mentioned earlier. Also the jaw line looks a bit odd to me too. Hope you don't mind I played with the face in photoshop a bit:

By using all techniques to make/draw a head, everything is placed correctly on the head. The eyes are halfway from the top of the head to the bottom of the chin. You can't really see it from the closeup perspective shot, because the actual image is distorted. If you look at the shot that is pulled further away, you can see the eyes are placed accurately now. Also, the head is five eyes wide, again normal human size, and if they are made any smaller she will look beady eyed and down syndrome-like. If I did the head as you suggested she would have an enormously large skull for the face as well. I appreciate the effort you went in to show what you're talking about, but I think the difference of what you're saying is only austhetically what you would do and not really "correct proportions" as such.

I like the improvements I've already made, and I have adjusted the head to what you said earlier. Thanks again for the help.

That's where the brow line should propably be. From what I've learned the eye line should be about in the middle of the head. Most of the head's mass should be on the topside of the head. Someone could verify this (Kurt?) so I'm not talking bs here user added image

Have you seen the Figure Drawing For All Its Worth by Andrew Loomis? It's in pdf format here:
https://www.saveloomis.org/
Little lighter version (gif images) can be found here:

You could study the images on these pages for hours:

But as you said this obviously isn't a human so I might just as well shut up user added image

You and I just said the same thing. I just said it weird. The eyes are in the middle of the head. Much better put than what I said. LOL

Heh, thanks for the link. I've seen fineart.sk before, and I have had many many photocopies of Loomis's stuff, so that's not really new to me. Loomis stuff is pretty cool but is still somewhat caracitured from real life. Especially his figure's height, in heads. His style is very good for comic book like creations though. I still don't know why they stopped publishing his books, especially since they are still saught after today.

The brow on the elf I did model differently though. It's much higher than normal on humans. I did this so when I get to the eyebrows they'll have the typical high arch to them, and still follow the brow instead of just being tacked onto the forehead like most artists do.

I'm still having a rough time getting the gloves to look right, and I think I've spent more time on them so far then anything else! Hands are tuff!
