remapping hotkeys

I regularly find myself hitting 8 instead of F8, sending me into paint effect mode and it drives me nuts!!
To save my sanity I've resorted to remapping the command, changing it to 'CTRL/ALT/CMD 8' and removing the offending '8' hotkey. I save the prefs and it works ok - the '8' key does nothing. But once I've quit Maya it's back the next time I startup! it's bad enough wrestling with everything in Maya without the hassle of this popping up mid flow. How can I keep the damn prefs saved?

Under File Menu, there should be a list that says "Save Preferences".

Should work.

My bad, I didn't read "hotkeys".

Quick search, and I think if you save it under Hotkey Editor instead of just general preferences? Maya should have been able to create a hotkey.mel script for your hotkey preferences under your preferences folder. Other than that, sorry I'm not much help. :-(

EDIT: Found this on Autodesk's forums.

thanks LS - so yet another bug that goes unfixed with AD moving on to maya2012. there's already several bugs I've come across in the new version so it looks like I'm sticking with 2011 and the workaround.
