fatal error is maya's catch all for something bad has happened. It may not be the split and cut edge operation at all. You could have to much history built up, or you are running low on system resources, or it could be the phase of the moon or contents of the refresh register or color of socks you are wearing.

All kidding aside these pop up a lot in maya.

Try this. close maya, reopen it, load a fresh version of the file before you did the projections. project again and this time after each projection and split and cut operation delete the history on the part you are cutting.

Also it could be helpful to see your wire frame.

Not sure what it could be then. Is it crashing when you try to do the projection or when you try to split and cut? Have you tried splitting without cutting (the option above) to see if it's the projection of the curve, the splitting of the curve, or the cutting of the edges that is crashing Maya.

Try this:

Export as an OBJ (This makes it just geometry)
Create a new Maya scene file
Import the exported OBJ

See if it crashes after that.

good idea ND. Short of what ND says I am not sure what to say other then place a bug report into Autodesk. That is a brand new feature in Maya 2012 so it may not be completely stable yet.
