Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

For lighting, is mastering BSP very important?

As a lighter, does one have to master the BSP settings?

I saw a tutorial and it doesnt make much sense.

The guy increases the values & oops the render time increases... then decreases the values & cuts down the rendertime by a few seconds. He seems to be only guessing.

Please let me know from lighting perspective , if its very critical to know it.

Thank you.

I'd say no it's not critical.

--- FROM THE HELP FILES ---
Use average BSP (mental ray for Maya) settings
When mental ray for Maya raytraces, it calculates the effects using an average of the depth and the average of the leaf size settings of the BSP.
To speed up subsequent renderings, you can render instead with the average settings (instead of your initial settings).
Find the averages in Maya's Output Window after you render the scene the first time (with Verbosity Level set to Progress Messages or above in Render > Render Current Frame > and Render > Batch Render > ), then change the settings in the Memory and Performance section.

That's all I've ever done but most of the time I never mess with it.

As a lighter, yes you should know these things. Master them, no; but know how to use them properly, yes.

Guessing won't really get you the best options. You're best bet is to use the visual diagnostics. Take a look below for some tips (Start at 23 minutes, 0 seconds in):
