Beer glass scene creation
This course contains a little bit of everything with modeling, UVing, texturing and dynamics in Maya, as well as compositing multilayered EXR's in Photoshop.

Virtualization would be more solid no doubt, but again we go back to the fact that I'd be using Windows which I have no wish to do.

I'm not a software snob I've used pretty much every OS over the years i'm an anything that will get the job done kind of guy, but i work in Linux so i use it at home as well and it's a pain in the ass to maintain two OS's and the software that goes with them.

They have an osx version which is POSIX compliant operating system so compiling a *nix version would be pretty simple. I guess they don't think there is a big enough market for it. Which for 3D software is pretty silly in my opinion. Nextlimit, Mental Images, Autodesk, The Foundry and most of the rest of the high end 3D vendors defiantly see the point of a Linux version of the software.

No Linux version... no money from me user added image

Finally got to try this out today, bloody beast compared to KS 2. I looked at the materials list, my jaw dropped, there are so many new material types it's insane, the new metal, glass, plastic, and paint materials are really awesome. The material options are much more user-friendly now aswell. As is the general material application process, it's always been drag and drop, but now if you copy a material to another part, it automatically links the parts together so any edit to one part affects the other at the same time. doesn't sound like much, but it's a HUGE time-saver.

What really does it for me is that it supports GPU+CPU rendering now, the results I normally get after it sitting in real-time rendering fro an hour, I'm getting in like 10-15 minutes now, its really amazing.

Decided to dig up my Artega GT model to try it out, these each sat for about 10 minutes

Great render Acid Can you combine different materials to build a customized shader

If you mean like a layered shader of sorts, not that I know of, however there are tons of shader types, so you can usually find one relatively close to what you need and then customize from there.

From what I gather maxwell isnt exactly time sensitive when rendering

It's not the worlds fastest render engine but it has the best distributed rendering system I've ever seen.

I like the results people get from it, but it looks too complicated for me, I'm a complete noob with rendering.

I have to say, I like that it has a proper colour wheel though, that's one thing KS doesn't have that drives me bloody insane

That looks really awesome... I've heard about Maxwell before, but I'm starting to get really interested. Not sure if I should try to really get to grips with MR first though...

modo and lightwave use something similar to the maxwell render engine, only it seems to come to the final render solution faster but it looks like the same kind of realtime render engine. They give very nice final renders with out all the gnashing of teeth and ringing of hands and pressing of buttons and dialing of knobs you have with mental ray. Like I keep saying mental ray is like a research toy written by some crazed physicist studying pan-dimensional hyper quantum light theory!
