Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

How To Make New Surfaces

My imported models to Maya only have one surface and I require to resurface them and add material in Maya but am unable to find a easy way to do this?

I used Lightwave 3d previously and I could easily open my models in Modeller and choose the polygons etc. and give tme new name to apply textures\surface.

Is there similar functionality in Maya?

Thanks.

I can go back in to Lightwave Modeller and create the surfaces but would rather do all in Maya. Must be a way to do this...

you can extract faces or select the faces you want to give a different material and assign a material to them

The "Mesh>Separate" command doesn't help break up the model in a way that's manageable?

Figured it out.

Select the model, right click, go to Faces, Highlight the Faces needed, Right click again and you have a choice of assigning materials.

Its a bit fiddly but it works.
