Site Launch

At long last, I have the pleasure of announcing that my website is officially live and online.

uoft.me/stuart

The site is still very much in progress; it takes a lot of time to create all the content. Please send me any comments or problems or questions you have. I've not had any problems yet with the comment form on my site, but I'm still wary of the process. So, if you want to make sure I get it, request a reply from me in the message, and then if you don't hear from me, try again or let me know in another communication channel.

Hope you like it. The server isn't the fastest ever, so let me know how loading feels to you. There will be lots of changes in the next while, so keep checking back.

You mean where it's going or how it's directed?

Haha, I got your post... I posted this in my WIP thread too where you posted, but I thought I'd make a new thread.

Hi Stuart,

I hope that my comments / Constructive Criticism helps and please don't take it personal as sometimes I can be too direct and straight to the point when it comes to Web related things. My comments won't be in order, so I will just comment on.

1. Can you get a shorter and personalized URL. e.g. stuart.com ? at the moment is too long (https://bmc.erin.utoronto.ca.....)

2. Looking at your site, the first question pops up is why do I have 2 separated menus? Left and Right.
Any particular reason for this sort of navigation? user added image

3. Loading Tweets box says loading but it doesn't load anything. user added image

4. In your Bio page, could you give some line height. All that information seems to be tight. Reading your bio I am left with one question.... do you know what you want to do in the future? If you know and planning to find a job after your Masters', you should re-write your Bio section. Just a recommendation user added image

5. In the About page, you already have the Contact form. Why do you have the Contact link again?

I am still bugged by the left / right menu...

If you are planning to proceed in 3D field doing biomedical 3d work, perhaps you should consider redesigning your entire site.

Again, I hope you don't take my crit personal. Just my honest opinion.

Thank you for your crits, they are helpful.

1. uoft.me/stuart is pretty short, which redirects to the server where the site is currently hosted. I can't do anything about that, but after I graduate, I will be hosting on another server where I can use the url stuartjantzen.com that I have registered (which also redirects to the current at the moment).

2. I am intending to tweak this navigation. As you navigate the site, you will notice that the left nav is always constant and provides quick access to the top level categories. The right nav changes with the pages, providing a hierarchical trail for your current page, allowing you to navigate within a main category of page. It does look a bit redundant at first glance so I plan to downsize the right nav and improve the visual impact of the left nav. Thanks for this crit.

3. Works for me, strange... anyone else having this problem?

4. Thanks, I'll fix the bio text to give better readability. I do know what I want to do in the future! I'll be updating my bio soon; currently it's the bio I wrote at the start of the program, just a few months ago. Still got 1.5 years before I look for a job user added image

5. I don't know why I have two contact forms... the second one is entirely unnecessary.

Thanks again for your crits, there's still lots to do. However, I'm not sure that it is entirely justified to scrap it and start over. I'm wondering why this would be the case if I want to proceed in 3D?

Not entirely. After all, everyone sees beauty differently. But I have seen some good 3D artist who do just bio medical 3d work and have a good looking site design. Again, this is just my perspective. Please don't take it personal. user added image

Either way, you can get some ideas by looking at other works as samples: https://www.templatemonster.com

I often find myself wondering around there looking for inspiration / ideas. user added image

No, I appreciate the feedback. I just was a bit confused as to how your five specific crits (which were helpful) led to the conclusion to redesign everything.

I agree that biomedical artists should have good site design, I just sorta thought that my site wasn't that bad (apart from the slightly confusing nav). But like you say, matter of opinion.

Oh, by the way, for anyone looking at it using IE (especially 6, shame on you) it probably looks like crap. I haven't had time to ensure cross-browser functionality. It should look fine in chrome and firefox and safari.
