pftrack import -sluggish scene

Hello simplyMaya forums,
I can't do anything in my scene- every time i move a keyframe, maya freezes for about 10 seconds. There is only an imported camera and a small mesh (3000 verts) from pftrack. (260 frames in total). I have a fairly decent setup i7 16gb-ram. I dare build any mesh around my camera for fear of nudging the timeline and freezing my efforts.

Has anyone encountered this before. Ive imported tracking data from boujou before with no problem. Im just trying to familiarise myself with pfttrack.

What resolution are the frames at? PFTrack will bring in the full resolution plates on import, so what you should do is scale down the frames afterwards, and tell Maya to use those. Also, if you play through your entire scene a few times, so that every frame has been displayed, it will cache those images to RAM, but again, it all depends on how big these images are. If they're 1920x1080, usually 960x540 is acceptable.

Hey thanks for the quick response.

Yes i'm using 1920x1080 but on import i disabled the image plane display assuming that it would be less to process. How would i go about scaling the frames? Ive already scaled down the objects in maya to no avail. Do you mean export a proxy from pftrack?

You can either export the proxy from PFTrack, or you can use an image editor. I like XnView because it supports pretty much every format on the planet.

Download it, go to where your images are, select all of them, and go to Tools>Batch convert. Go over to actions, and click on the plus button under processing, then image, then resize. Set the width to 960, and the height to 540. Then, go back to output, and enter "{Filename}" as the file name. Choose your format (jpg is fine) and choose a new directory to save the images. Click convert, and it will run through all the images in a few moments.

Even though you might have hidden the image plane, it still might be hanging around in the hypershade, so it's best to just use it, but put in a proxy. Just open it up, and point it to the new proxy location, and it should go faster.

Thanks again, il look into using that software. Ive just hidden the camera on a layer for now and I am using the imported geometry to model/animate around. ideally il want to see the image so il get onto that Xnview.
