Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 2
This course will look in the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. It's aimed at people that have some modeling experience in Maya but are having trouble with complex objects.

Are your normals facing the correct way?

Try going to the panel menu and click lighting > and enable two-sided lighting. If it was off and you enable it and your model shows up, then your normals are facing the wrong way. You can also go Display > Polygons > Face normals to check if your normals are facing outward. Do a bit of googling on normals if you're still not sure.

You can also select your model and just go normals > reverse, and see if that fixes it.

If it's not the normals, try re-assigning a material to your object, like lambert1.

I delete the material and add the Lambert 1, still the same issue.

I think it's not the normal issue it's something else. When the model is imported into Maya and I start going around the model it has this shading light around the model.

Did you try reversing the normals or checking their directions as stwert suggested?

Make sure you do not have the 7-key pressed and are in textured, shaded, and lit mode. With no lights in the scene you will get a display like that.

Something odd is going on because you are getting lighting from certain angles. If you post the .ma file I'll take a look at it. Also, you might try reseting your userprefs.mel file.

Can you create a new object like a cube or sphere please and tell us if it has it's lighting messed up? If so open a brand new maya scene and then create an object and see if it's lighting is messed up and let us know.

I am trying to find if you have a problem just with this scene file or with your global preference settings.

It is the normals. Go Normals > Set to face. And then Normals > Soften edge. Strange thing. I haven't seen that before.

Alternately, just go Normals > Unlock Normals.
