Introduction to Maya - Rendering in Arnold
This course will look at the fundamentals of rendering in Arnold. We'll go through the different light types available, cameras, shaders, Arnold's render settings and finally how to split an image into render passes (AOV's), before we then reassemble it i

Poly Spilt Tool Issues

Hi guys. Finally got Maya installed and licensed and decided to have a go at modelling something. Although it doesn't look like Maya has changed much in the time I've been away, it's definitely not like riding a bike and I'm very rusty with lots of stuff being completely forgotten. But I've got to start somewhere so although I'm not planning on following it I decided to dig out Kurt's old Ninja warrior DVD and grab the reference images off it so I could have play around with Maya's poly modelling tools and see what comes back to me. The first image is what I've got so far (I know this isn't a W.i.P thread).

However although it's worked out on most of the model I've ran into an issue with the Split tool not working. It gives me one of two results (randomly), when I hit enter after laying down my new vertices it either fails to create any new edges or it goes off and creates a triangle somewhere i didn't click. As far as I can tell I didn't accidentally double extrude anything without transforming and I've been around and hit merge vertices around the area just in case I did and there was a face I couldn't see. However that hasn't changed anything and the mesh looks fine in wireframe or x-ray. It does appear like there is some strange dark shading in the poly's in that area if its a clue to anyone as what would cause this?

Any help appreciated, Ckyuk.

Is the standard split doing that as well?(I don't ever use the interactive split to be honest)

Try the original split tool. The command is SplitPolygonTool and SplitPolygonToolOptions. I keep these on my custom modeling shelf as I dislike the interactive split polgon tool.

As for the odd shading try unlocking the normals. This is under the normals tab. Hardening the normals can also fix odd shading artifacts but this will cause you to have to go through and resoften edges if you do not intend to smooth the model. Also turn off two-sided lighting to be sure you do not have flipped faces.

I didn't realise you could still access the original split poly tool, so thanks to you both for that. Got a couple of buttons for it on my custom shelf now and will try sticking to that and see if any issues pop up the same. I had the same issue with the interactive tool a few places in the model where I know there shouldn't be any issues so guessing the interactive tool is a little temperamental. I eventually got around it (before reading your replies so couldn't try suggestions) the long way of using the tool to build additional geometry around the area and merging vertices before re-positioning. A very long winded way I'd like to avoid, so hopefully won't have any issues with the new old split tool.
