Just got home and jumped on Maya, all you have to do is select which ever attributes you want to lock ie: translate(move), Rotate, or Scale right click on them and select lock selected....make sure you have the right IK handle or joint selected

i've tried it. after locking attributes only the manipulators get grey. but the object itself is still selectable.

Add your control to a display layer and set it to reference or template. If you want this automatically done when you switch between IK and FK, you'll probably have to create a little script to do this.

Simply do the following:

For every object you want to make a reference, turn on "Enable Overrides" under Drawing Overrides in the attribute editor.

Now, either use utility nodes or a set driven key, and set the object's overrideDisplayType to 2 for reference, 0 for normal, when you switch your control. Just so you know, most rigs hide the objects instead of referencing them, as you can't do anything with them anyways, so it just clutters up the scene.

Imagination is more important than knowledge.
