How do I make my render faster.

I'm new with maya, how do I render fast with maya software and having my ray traced shadows on. plus I want to have good quality. I'm stuck. Please help. Thanks!

Put more hamsters in your computer.

But really, there are far too many variables to give a simple answer. Try playing with the Shadow Rays in the raytrace shadow attributes. Use spotlights instead of directional lights to decrease the amount of light being calculated. Reduce the sampling quality in the render settings. Reduce the raytracing reflection and refraction trace depth. Use low resolution and interactive render region for your test renders.

Why even use Maya Software renderer when you can use Mental Ray? It's far more powerful. Either way, we don't know your scene or hardware setup, so it's hard to even answer that question.
