You have to do it by eye that's why I called it a work around, some times maya does not do all we want in these cases you have to work around it and get on with modelling ................dave

Dave's, idea will work.

1. create a vertex on each book edge using insert edge
2. set the origin of one book the the vertex you created
3. snap one book witht he origan at the desired vertex to the vertex on the edge of the book you want it stacked on
4. rotate to the angle you like
