Maya for 3D Printing - Rapid Prototyping
In this course we're going to look at something a little different, creating technically accurate 3D printed parts.

It's been a while ...........

haven't been here in a long time and missed ya'll .........

made a move from California to Nevada, and because of my disability and not being able to work
was somewhat lost mentally, and went thru several depression stages user added image

Some may remember I was a custom cabinet / furniture maker by trade (hence all my Maya works related to woodworking)
Have since found a wood working venue I can physically do, turning on a wood lathe, so have become comfortable again user added image

have turned it into a hobby/part time business, so it keeps me and my mind occupied user added image

Some C & C on my latest works would be appreciated,
I'm doing larger utilitarian bowls & platters, earrings, bottle stoppers (wine's, oils, vinegars, etc etc) keychains, and knick knacks, currently also starting designing some Christmas ornaments for trees ....

https://one-time-designs.net/

Am getting into a process called Segmented Turning, and the design possibilities are truly endless
While most wood turners are using SketchUp for creating their designs, I simply do not like that program, and have much better control over complete designing within Maya .........

So, in near future, I'll be back to asking questions again regarding textures mainly,
and am thinking I'll be doing projections along with UV work.
The UV part I was getting a good grasp on, it'll be the projections I'll be needing help on
That and a refresher on the color difference between a picture taken, and what actually shows in maya (Genny helped me before, gonna have to try and find those posts, sorry forgot what the process is called)
Lost all my training I'd purchased in past, so will have to start re-downloading all again user added image

Off to view the gallery and see what I've missed user added image

Nice work, good to hear you're able to enjoy doing woodworking again. I love the heart candy dish, it's fantastic.

Welcome back! I see you've been quite the busy bee(really dig bowl 101 btw). Color difference in Maya? I'm going to throw a guess out there and say gamma correction. Anyways, looking forward to the renders. user added image

Thanks ya'll user added image , poking thru the gallery I see I missed a lot, still haven't checked to see what neat new tuts have been produced, but definitely needing visual help again user added image

stwert, was looking for your last project I remember (BMC ?, and something to do with genomics? )
did you ever finish it? last I remember, you were just working on the mouse exoskeleton, and the finely detailed microscope, was keenly interested in your progress......

dave, that either means you don't drink, or there's never anything left to save user added image
I quit drinking 18 years ago, so use all mine for my cooking bottles (wine's, vinegars, oils, soy's, etc),
that and they make neat trinkets to give friends who do drink ..........

And yes! Gen, that was it, gamma correction, definitely gonna have to get a handle on it
as this new Segmenting process, the colors and combinations have to be exactly perfect for reference .......
bowl 101 was actually the 2nd bowl I ever did on the lathe, and very happy/proud of it as it came out perfect (constant/even 3/16" walls) and one of the tougher shapes to do, especially for a beginner.

With so many turners out there, trying to find my own niche' , so a majority of my works will involve strictly Burl woods (rare) and Spalted woods (infested with fungi (safe for humans) and caught at right time for optimal grain/coloring when turning).
Either way, like stwert says, feels great! to work with wood again user added image

Yeah, I did finish the project pretty much a year ago. Here's the link to the animation: https://bmc1.erin.utoronto.ca/~stuart/rin/
And there's a Unity based simulator that went along with it. Glad you to hear your interest in it.

WoW stwert, excellent final project, and am impressed user added image
I remember seeing you doing the pieces, and had no clue when looking at them individually
but when combined in your final presentation, all makes perfect sense now.

There were 4 of you that I'd log in daily to see updates on .....
You, tweetytunes & Mr. Jackson with their mechanoids, and Jay with his "Outlaws" storybook.
The amount of fine details ya'll put into your models gave me inspiration to do more realistic when creating my woodworks (ie. computer desk v2, and my bedroom unit)
The computer desk is done, after adding the monitor illuminations that were advised,
haven't touched the bedroom unit from where I left it, but am planning on getting back to it again.
Still have to grok the gamma correction for the textures to look correct, then it'll be on to getting a better handle on lighting.

But, 1st and foremost will be the gamma correction as I have several Segmented bowls and platters I want to design and the coloring/texturing of the different woods needs to be perfect user added image

Nice to see you back, and good you've been keeping busy. The black walnut bowl is really pretty. Look forward to seeing what you'll come up with next.

Hi Nilla, and Thank You user added image
glad you liked the Black Walnut bowl, that wood just might be an endangered species here in the U.S very soon user added image
There's a disease that affects Walnut, completely destroys the wood and makes it completely useless,
has always been around, only in very limited quantities and has been fairly manageable in past .....
Seems now for some reason that it has started to escalate and invade a lot of the known sections where the Walnut grows, no one knows exactly why or how to stop/retard the process user added image
Guess that also means the price of walnuts themselves will be going up, as this disease affects them too.
Pricing of the wood has been jumping the past couple months, so I've been stocking up on some nicely figured pieces that I find here and there .........

Guess pretty soon mankind will make almost all trees/woods an endangered species if we keep going/building like we are ...........

just a quick update .......
I belong to a group, American Association of Woodturners,
members include some of the more famous turners and instructors in the world.
Of all the submissions, this week a piece of mine was selected as " Turning of the Week "
for me, quite the honor considering the type of competition I had user added image

Claro Walnut Bowl, 11" diameter x 3" tall

user added image

guess now I can justify raising my prices user added image

Damn thats pretty! I checked out your etsy store, the prices are lower than i thought they would be!

I might just chance the dreadful czech post a pick up a piece at some point.

Seriously very nice

Thank ye for the kind words user added image
There's too many turners out there creating "small" things that only a collector could afford
I can't justify their kind of pricing.
my business policy ...... make things large enough to be useful, make them completely food safe, and above all else, price items so normal hard working people can afford to have something nice.
It's funny, of all the bowls & platters I've sold (more locally and thru Facebook than Etsy) , there's only 1 person actually using the piece..... everyone else just has them up on display ...... could've saved 1/2 the finishing time minimally if I'd known they wouldn't use them LOL
Lastly, If you do find something you like, let me know thru here and I guarantee it'll work out "cheaper" than going thru Etsy ...... but postal fees will be the biggest issue user added image
