Maya for 3D Printing - Rapid Prototyping
In this course we're going to look at something a little different, creating technically accurate 3D printed parts.

Prevent Meshes Penetrating

Hello all,

Recently, I've modelled a character and added clothes on. Is there a way to check whether if any parts of the cloth is penetrating the character?

Thank you!

Hi,

Unfortunately there is no button or option to check this for 2 separate objects, but what you can do is;

Activate smooth shade all and wireframe on shaded on the objects as marked in photo 1

Then activate xray as marked in photo 2

Then you can move your vertex on the penetrating object to clear the other object as shown in photo 3 and photo 4

If you find that the 2 objects are hard to make out while viewing them as their wireframes are the same;

You can select one of the objects, add it to a new layer, change the colour of the layer which will in turn change the wireframe, then move the points, although the line will change to default bright blue when you select edges or vertex.

After if you want to change it back to the default colour, just choose the slash icon.

All of this can be seen in photo 5

Hope this helps!

you can also create a toon shader to do this for you. We use the technique on occasion to check intersection on muscles and bones geometry
