I remember my brother showed me a site where you could download a free program that let you create realistic mountains in a few minutes. Maybe someone else can help you here or on cgtalk...

Hi,

Just a note if you are using Maya 4.5 and mental ray

Try this,

From the visor import the scene that has a mountain range called 'Terrain' (found under fluid examples>bottom folder) into the current scene by right clicking and importing.

Render the scene (through the 'Terrain Cam') 640 480 using standard Maya renderer.
Click the button in the render view that enables you to 'keep image',

now,

render scene again with Mental ray renderer using production quality via the mental ray render options.

the difference is quite astounding. the maya one (youll agree looks cool) but the Mental Ray render looks kind of eery and real.....

Try this with your 'terragon' scenes as well.

Have fun

re Jim

Mayan elder......only in years.....

pull the cv's of your nurb surface (plane),
use artisan sculpt surfaces tooll, experiment, no one dies doing it.

download the moutain shader in highend3d.com.
