Just a really simple question..

HELLO, all.

I'm no newbie to the world of 3d, but i'm definately new to Maya..
I have been using lightwave for around 2 years or so, and i wanted to know just how much of a jump it is to get into Maya.. I might just use Maya for particle effects, or switch all together just depends on the learning curve.. Anyone else made the jump from lightwave over?? i would like to know just what i may be in for..

Made the jump and stuck with maya. It is very different i warn you but it has its huge advantages over it. First thing i would do is learn about dependency graph and how everything links togeather. Also look into NURBS and how they work.. it works very very differntly from lightwave.. but i didnt take too long changing over just get yourself a book on maya so you can transfer your skills over.

I have never used anything but maya, but just about any 3d modeling and animation program will have a steep learning curve. Maya is not extremely difficult to learn. I guess it depends on who you are.

Ive been using lightwave since the Amiga days and I just recently started to learn Maya myself... they are similar enough to make the transition easy and if you are artistic you will definately appreciate the new modeling ideas introduced in Maya. Ive only been using Maya now for about a month and a half and I havnt touched Lightwave since (thats not at all to say that LW is a bad program or that I will never use it, I will, it still rocks). Maya is Buzz Lightyear and Lightwave is Woody... I guess that makes sense... Definately give it a shot.
