Introduction to Maya - Rendering in Arnold
This course will look at the fundamentals of rendering in Arnold. We'll go through the different light types available, cameras, shaders, Arnold's render settings and finally how to split an image into render passes (AOV's), before we then reassemble it i

space guy poly model

hey everyone,
this is my first attempt at organic modelling, just a silly little character a drew up. it's poly, box modelled, did the head seperately and then the body with cubes and extrude faces and split polygons.

the problem i'm having is that the body still looks overly boxy. i'm not sure how to go about pushing/pulling vertexes to achieve a form that doesn't look like a glorified box. anyone have any tips for me to try to get this model a little less box-like? i'm also trying to achieve more wrinkles for the space-suit type thing, so if anyone has any wrinkle tips i'd be much appreciative.

also don't mind the hand, i just got preoccupied with other stuff and didn't bother to finish it yet..

here's a wireframe also.

forgot to mentino that there will be a plate-type thing on his chest when he's finished that will have knobs and gizmos and a hose coming out of it to attach to helmet. so i'm not so concerned about how the chest form is.

Hey great start so far! I was once in your place of stuck not knowing how to make it unboxy. Anyway, create a poly cylinder and go on the top view, take a look at how the points are separated from each other. They are not separated in a straight line but instead they go kinda in a circly type of way..Try to do that with the edges of your space man body. for example, take the middle edges of his suit and move it forward and then start going on the sides but dont move it up pass the the middle, what youre trying to do is go for a cylinder type body but not all the way cuz then it wouldnt look like a body anymore..But anyway, thats sorta how i make my stuff..have fun!

so far you seem to be getting the proportions but as far as getting everything done.... give your character uniqueness.... thats pretty much it since org said everything.

okay, uniqueness, got it. what about the wireframe? does the mesh seem pretty alright? i don't want excessive polygons if i don't need them, but at the same time i'm not entirely sure where i should/shouldn't be cutting. at the moment i'm just kinda haphazardly cutting here and there and hoping it looks good.

Mike has done a good tut on making creases in cloth here;

https://www.simplymaya.com/movie_page...html?tut_id=53

which is well worth a look at.

Basically you can create creases and make polys look like cloth by using the split poly tool and then moving edges. I attach a pic of the general idea (the trousers resulting were a bit crease mad and I don't think I used them for anything in the end lol, but it was worth it to get the hang of making creases that flowed along the lines of the cloth etc).

i tried converting to subd's and playing with that a little bit. good idea? bad idea? it seems to ahve worked out alright but it got a little messy at times when i tried to make the smoothness 3, hehe.

I'm liking it. I would give the chest box some random electronics and make the hose longer. It needs some slack so he can turn his head. Last time I was in space, it was darn annoying that my hose wasn't long enough.

yeah the box is going to have random knobs and gadgets on it, that's on the list of stuff to do. good idea about the hose... it makes sense. last time i was in space must have been after you because they had taken care of the slack problem since you filed a complaint, hehe.
