Maya Alpha Transparancy Photoshop

Hello

I'm quite new to Maya (v5.0) and i'm having problems using the 2D 'Paint
Effects'. I've tried the manual and various websites but with no success. I
want to be able to use the brushes e.g. the trees (from Visor) and paint
onto the white canvas (using, Window - Paint Effects). This bit i can do. I
want to then save this picture and work on it in photoshop but maintaining
the alpha channel i.e. the white canvas becomes transparent in photoshop. I
want to keep the RGB colours (not greyscale). Is this possible?

I've tried going to, Canvas - Save As (3d box) - 'Save Alpha' is ticked. I
then use 'Save Image'. I've used every file extension and saved it. None of
them seem to work when i bring the picture into photoshop. Am i supposed to
select an option once i've brought it into photoshop to 'enable' the
transparancy to work?

What file extensions should work when i save in Maya? I want to maintain the best possible
quality when i open it up in Photoshop.

Thanks for any help

photoshop 7 messed up the alpha saving... you need to download the Photoshop 7.1 update from Adobe.

EDIT:

Oh, I think I misunderstood. You're saying image saved from Maya's paint on canvas feature are not incorporating an alpha?
I'd have to get back to you on that. I don't use that option much.

OK if this is what you want.

What I did was press 8 to paint and paint on canvas. Then in the menu items on the canvas go to canvas/save as OptionBox then check save alpha press save image in file type select tiff and it will save the alpha and retain the white background.

user added image

in photoshop got to the channel editor and you can turn on or off the alpha
