This course will look at the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. We'll look at what makes a good model in Maya and why objects are modeled in the way they are.

nah, going on holiday for a month in 5 days time. Wont be back till early May. Anyway ..... it was a good learning experience I think.

I'd like to share a revelation that I've had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species. I realized that you're not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment, but you humans do not. You move to an area, and you multiply, and multiply, until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet, you are a plague, and we are the cure.

that looks great - i like the lights and plants alot. the only thing that bothers me a little bit is the modeling of the ruin. to me it is a little bit suspicious that the model falls out of the sky in the first render. and then it looks like it never gets changed throughout the different renders. newbie or not i just cannot imagine anyone beeing happy with the first try of modeling something.

just my 2 cents

well, it wasn't the first try. You'll notice that I didn't make my first post until fairly late in the month, that was because it took me a while to get something built that I liked. Actually, it wasn't really that hard, I followed some hints I read about the alienware challenge winner Jari Saarinen https://www.jsaarinen.com/galpic1.htm which is currently my desktop wallpaper (one of them as I am running quad screens now) and I have got some excellent books on maya, Maya 5 fundamentals by Garry lewis and Jim Lammer, and Maya 5 Savvy by John Kundert-Gibbs and Peter Lee. These and very friendly advice from SimplyMaya members is all anyone needs to learn Maya, the rest is simply a matter of practice. I enjoy this program immensely as its potential is fantastic and the forums and nice people here are terrific! (will that win me extra points mike?), just frustrates me when you see what REALLY good artists can do with it and think "man, I wish I could do that".

an update, this one shows some promise. It has been a problem though, keeps crashing Maya and a render takes forever, anyway, needs lots of work yet, some distant background buildings, more "jumble", lots of stuff. I have two nights left to do it in.

Very original, I would not have thought of such a thing.

I am in 10th grade, sophomore in high school, but if you don't take me serious, I'll make you.

*SIGH*........ well, thats where it falls down mike ...... I know nothing about texturing and lighting. What I have, I have done just by following bits and peices from different tutorials, without even knowing if it'll work or not. Well, I'm still fairly happy with it so far, added some "characters" to the scene and "aged" it a bit (overdid it?) tried to apply feathers to the bird, but I modelled it in polygons and they are not paintable, so it is wearing a "cloth" texture for the moment until I work out how to put feathers on it. user added image I want a "bird of paradise" type bird, hence the bright colour.
