Maya for 3D Printing - Rapid Prototyping
In this course we're going to look at something a little different, creating technically accurate 3D printed parts.

Oh poo, I only just noticed that. Grrr, thats really going to annoy me, but you won't see it once the other parts are on. I'll just remember to check them when I do the next bricks!! Thanks for pointing that out :p

Morning all.

Thanks for all the encouragement from everyone. I'm trying to get this finished so I can start on the challenge (I hardly ever seem to get things finished!!).

Here's some more updates:

I had a bit of trouble getting the clear blocks to look good, but this is a good attempt for me.

Here's a wireframe for anybody thats interested. Its a bit messy, I tried to keep the actual blocks quite neat and precise, and kept them to 4 or 3 sided polys, but as soon as I started adding the little lego nobbly bits, it went to pot. I just started coombining without cleaning it up, so its not the best mesh in the world. I'm happy with it so far though, its just for fun. user added image

Really taking shape now, I've added the doors. I might post up a pic of the actual model later. C+C welcome.

Thanks Paul. Am I going to be seeing your spitfire in the finished works section soon, its looking pretty good user added image ?

I think I need to sort out the highlights on the clear blocks, I don't think that they are sharp enough. Planning on doing some more over the weekend, then I need to sort out my challenge thread, woo hoo user added image

Some more updates. I've nearly finished the modelling, just need to do the bits inside the wheels. I'm undecided on wether to model a little lego policeman!

I think I'm happy with the model so far, but I would really like to improve the lighting, there's lots I need to learn about it. I was thinking about giving HDRI a go, but I'm not too sure how to go about doing it. I've looked up some tutorials on the net though.

Anyway, hope you guys like it. I'm going to do an exploded view too, so you can see all the bricks, and how it goes together :p

Sorry about the crappy images.......

Does anybody know how I can soften these shadows?? I'm using raytraced shadows, which I'm not overly familiar with.

To soften the shadows click at the light and go under
"Raytrace Shadow Attributes".
Set the "Light Radius" to 1, and Lights Rays to about 10.
But as always, you should experiement with the values. user added image
