Maya for 3D Printing - Rapid Prototyping
In this course we're going to look at something a little different, creating technically accurate 3D printed parts.

Elephant head

I had a little time to start the elephant head. I think it looks like crap right now, but I will fix it up to look much better and more realistic. I also have to lift the trunk in the air and have the mouth and eyes wide open, like it is horrified. I also began the mouse, but it needs a lot of work too, especially to make it a little more realistic. I'll post images of that later.

Thanks

Awesome, I have some other ref pics, but not the ones you posted. Thanks. Its nice to see full body images of elephants because most of the pics cut off some part of the animal. Now texturing the model will be interesting.

Grass and Trees added

Google is the only thing I use to finde images. Its very quick.

I added some paint effects... grass and trees. I havent used paint effects before, but they are awesome. I just have to figure out how to light link a few lights off ofthe grass and trees because they are rendering too illuminated right now, but there is a lot of work to be done. I want to change the mood of the image to a moon-lit night scene, but it is getting a little difficult to have everything visible that needs to be seen, and not in shadows.

nice use of paint fx! user added image You'll probably get better control over lighting them by converting them to polygons (although they'll be very high res).

Rocks-Hard and Soft Normals

I was playing with the normals on the polygon rocks, changing them to hard and soft, and mixing which edges were softened or not. The bottom image is what I liked best, its a mix. It may be difficult to see clearly bc I didnt want a huge file to post on here.

Top - All Hard Normals
Middle - All Soft Normals
Bottom - Hard and Soft Normals mix

??? Does anyone know why saving an image as a jpeg from Maya gets a nice image, highly compressed (very small file kilobyte size), as compared to saving an image in Photoshop as a jpeg, which in turn makes the image a much larger file size, yet only similar or less quality than that of the Maya jpeg???

Grass

I forgot to post an image yesterday. I worked on the grass and tree in the background. Paint effects are fun.

Chain

I made this chain using a NURBS torus, moved some CVs around, and then opened the Duplicate options box. I changed the number of duplications and the degree of rotation around the Y axis. I will have to reposition the links though to fit them around the elephants leg. I also want to change the end links, and maybe add a sort of cushion for the elephant's leg, like in a zoo picture I have.

I'll have to make it look more realistic later, even though it probably will not be that noticeable in the final rendered image.
