Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

I am thinking about possibly entering this competition, it all depends on time (as always). It should be difficult to get a nice looking transformation from object to vehicle.

I know we cant copy any of the existing "transformers", but is there any chance we could put our own spin on a transformer character of a sort? Essentially we would be redesigning a character. They have been redesigning the classic transformer characters for years.

I imaginen it'd depend on what exactly you had in mind. But it could be said that anyone who's making a robot transform from, for example, an 18-wheeler is redesigning Optimus Prime. When I said don't copy Transformers, i didn't mean, don't copy the vehicle they transform into... I meant don't copy the robot part. You can do 18-wheelers, volkswagon bugs, jets, etc which are all used in the cartoon. Just don't make your robot look like theirs! user added image

Are we to add animations of how it transforms? In theory anyone can do a before and after shot and not actually transform the vehicle/robot. So are animations a must or an added bonus? Or how about a progression of screens to show the transformation?

Ok, say I have a 18-wheeler, and it transforms the same exact way that Optimus Prime does, but the body is different, and colors are different, and it would have a different face. Would that be copying?

I'd personally prefer you tried to not mimic the animation used in the old cartoons as well. But if you do, I imagine it won't be terrible.

Animation is a "if you have time" deal, and is definitely recomended. If animation isn't possible, an image progression would be cool too.

I probably would not be able to mimic the same exact type of transformation as the cartoon versions. The robot/vehicle would be a bit different. The most it would have would be similarities in transformation if I can pull off any video transformation at all. Is that within the guidelines?

Can there be a building on wheel which pops out head or something like that. Doing such a thing is allowed or not.

Looks like everyone's progressing well. Don't forget this part:

"You aren't limited to just using the same parts, however. Just like in the Transformers cartoon, heads and hands and guns and such can pop out of the innards of the machine and don't have to be visible in both the vehicle and mech incarnations of the model."

That goes both ways, too. If there's a part of the vehicle you don't want to use in the mech, have it collapse into the body. But do make sure your mech design does convey the vehicle it transforms from!

Another thing you can keep in mind is that you can collapse, say, a car door, into the body and then have it reapear elswhere, as a new model with all of the animating pieces. Stuff like that!

I'll see where people are at the end of the month and consider whether or not the challenge will need to be extended based on its late start.

Can i model a vehicle made of wood. However it sounds stupid but i a thinking of an highly advanced technology which keeps electronics i wood also. The wood is strong and it can be stronger than iron.
For example there is a skateboard whose wheels are rubber, axles are steel and the board is wood. This skateboard transforms and become a robot who has a part(major part) of his body a wood.
