I added a shield and decided to move ahead with texturing. I started with the shield (since it was the last item worked on and seemed the easiest to UV map. I'm still working on the rim and I need to turn the reflectivity down for the paint just a bit. I haven't decided how realistic I want to go with the textures yet and I may change them all once I get finished. But I figured it's always easier to go from detailed to simple rather than the other way around.
