Maya for 3D Printing - Rapid Prototyping
In this course we're going to look at something a little different, creating technically accurate 3D printed parts.

Is this the way people usually go about weighting skin on characters? I'm really struggling and i cant seem to find much info on painting skin weights. My problem is that I cant see how to balance them out so that each cluster adds up to 1. Where can I find this information... I have tried using the component editor. Obviously i'm missing something, I've been trying for 13 hours solid!!
If any one can help Im worried I'll have to abandon ship and begin something new.... I really want to get this!!!!!

You could try what I do.

Bind the skeleton with a smooth bind, then start to move one side (sat the left) of the skeleton so you can see the dodgey areas. Select the dodgey verts either using standard selections or using the paint selection tools.

Then go to skin->edit smooth skin->Smooth skin weights, you should then see the verts go to where you should expect, if they dont quite get there smooth the skin weights again. To go back to the initial pose just select go to bind pose, then repeat with other joints.

When you get to the neck, I usualy select all the verts in the head then go to the componanat editor and then just add a value of 1 to the joint I want to control the head, this gives a bit of a strange look but just go the smooth skin weights again on te dodgey verts and it should be fine.

This works really well for the shoulder, spine and hip areas, but its not too good for the elbows, you'll have to paint them.

Once one side is sorted, mirror the weights over.

Hope it helps

Hi gster
I don't have the smooth skin weights under this menu option.....
skin->edit smooth skin->Smooth skin weights,

Are there any other routes to find this action?

Thanks

Jo

Hi There Jo

Ive just had a check to make sure that its not somewhere else, yup its there (maya 2008 i'm on, and the version that it was introduced)

You could check out the help files, but it should be there.

Unfortunatly the smooth weights option came along in 2008 (which superseeded 8.5)

Sorry.

The only thing that you could do is the old fashioned painting weights round that area, adding weight to the spine joints (low amounts .1 or so untill they get better.)

Painting weights is a right pain, if you stick with it and just try to add you'll get there.

if you get stuck PM or mail me and i'll have a look.

Yep, unfortuantly!

You will get used to it and find shortcuts and your own workflow, its a bit of a shame that you've got 8.5 as the smooth weights option makes it a lot easier.

Well have fun!

Steve

I cant believe it!!!!! I have just figured out what i was doing wrong. I was takin the penguin in to paint skin weights in his standard position and trying to balance out the weights then taking him out to normal mode to test him. I have now realised after days of faffing around that you have to lift his arms first as in the pictures i posted last then paint on the deformed areas!! I feel really relieved!! I knew i was missing something really simple. Maybe the simple thing is me!! Ha.............Yessssssssssssssssssssssss  I have learnt soooo much by getting it sooo wrong!! Thank you x

haha, no probs.

I think painting weights is possible the most confusing/frustrating things in maya.

If you wanted you can set keys so that hes in his start pose for frame 1 and then say at frame 25 hes in a position (say one leg bent) then you can scrub the time line an paint, once your happy just delete the keys to return him back to his origianl position.
