Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 2
This course will look in the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. It's aimed at people that have some modeling experience in Maya but are having trouble with complex objects.

Haha, yeah me too!

I'm planning on fully developing this character.
I should actually be starting in the next couple of days, I'm just gathering some reference, as I'm planing on having him topless (at least for now) so I want to get the anatomy spot on.

Thanks!

I guess the word "him" followed by the word "topless" won't exactly make sparks fly with a lot of the users here lol :p

maybe its becuase it looks like it should be something you can recognise but you can't?
it looks like a pig but not a pig, but also a lizard but also not a lizard

Nope, its more to do with how its all fitting together as one model anatomically, its sort of like the base bone structure and the muscles dont, in my mind really mesh together to give a "proper" form, the eyes are a big part of that, they look like they would pop out. If you get what I mean.

Well, I'm only doing 'him' topless, because I have to study anatomy.

As for the head.. Yeah it doesn't have a very human anatomical structure, but have a little imagination user added image

I'll see how it comes together, and make any necessary changes.

Thanks!

i have to say though mayaniac - i was also thinking that the eyes were popping slightly in the second model, as well as the third - it's almost as if the actual eyeball is sitting too high in the socket.

and actually his anatomy does look very human, you know, apart from the nose and lips and whatever. sure, if he looked completely alien then he could look like whatever, but in this case it still has to look right. that's not to say that it doesn't look good, but i tend to agree with gster - it needs a bit more work. user added image

and come on, where's my topless alien?

I agree Arran, its pretty human, the bits are all in the human, places its just the overall look and exaggeration of features thats sets it appart, Its not got like eyes for ears and a nose for a mouth

I personally would look at the form of the head just to get it right so that it "fits" a bit more with the anatomy of the character. It looks that its quite high in the subdivision levels, knock it down a couple of levels and adjust the form at that level for bone structure, going up to add muscles and detailing. As its a tad "rounded" so to speak.

Just needs work at the lower level I feel.

Should say too that if your making a alien or a new type of life, you have to thing how things would fit together, using what you know about how humans and animals fit together, that way it makes it more beleivable to the viewer (although things probably would be so so different on a real alien planet!)

Thanks guys/gals!

I can see allot of the things you mentioned, and I agree.

I'm going to take the time, to properly set the character in stone. I'm going to be doing some sketching, and sculpting to try and bring the character together a bit better.

Thanks!

Also, when I did try to model it... I soon realized I needed a bit more practice in organic modeling, before I was ready to fully develop a character.

Anyway, here some shots of a practice torso model. And my Burne Hogarth books have come in very handy.
