Maya for 3D Printing - Rapid Prototyping
In this course we're going to look at something a little different, creating technically accurate 3D printed parts.

Ben:

Haha, yeah, I didn't think I'd have quite as much fun as I usually prefer to create new characters and objects rather than model from real life, but this has been too fun so far! It's got the enjoyment of modelling in Maya, and it's also almost like playing with Lego at the same time....brilliant!
And it's bringing back loads of memory's of this set too.
The film was good by the way, although I wasn't fully focused on it....lol

Got a bit more done this morning and am now off out for the day, will try to do a bit tomorrow night though.
I'm looking forward to getting onto the figures and the horses!

I like how youve left aload of the pieces you're working with strewn around the outside. I forget how much time I used to spend playing with Lego. The characters that go in this could really make or break it!!

Congrats by the way on the speed machine challenge. Liked your entry. I wasnt around for that one.

(what was the film?)

yeah, looks like you've opened a pack and dumped all the pieces all over the floor

I agree with the others; great work, great presentation, and great render!

Thanks mate, glad you're liking it! Fun fun fun all the way with this one!

Ben:

Yeah, I'm about to start the characters soon, and I'm so glad this is a two month challenge this time around or else I'd be having to rush them a bit. Cheers for the congrats, I did enjoy that speed machine challenge, have had next to no time for modelling sinse which has been a shame.
The film was Soylent Green, it was a Saturday morning and I was in a retro movie mood....lol

Chirone:

Glad I got the look right then, was worried it would look crap!

Josh:

Thanks, I'll strive to better the quality of the render over the next month, and see about re-doing the lighting too.

Only a little update today, it was a long day and I have to be up at 5am again so only managed an hour this evening, but the castle itself is almost finished, three or four different pieces left to model and its done! Yay! Then it's onto the Knights and horses!
Hopefully should have some time on Thursday evening to get started on those, tomorrow's off limits modelling wise as I'm out all day and evening.

you can always put this on a desk in your environment challenge too!

horses will be interesting... not being to blocky like the rest of the stuff

Dave:

Thanks mate! It is all geo, but instances are also geo anyway, all it helps with is when you make a change to one object the change is carried out for all other instances of it. Using instances doesn't change the poly count and help with the processing though I'm afraid.

Chirone:

Haha, that would be cool! I'm not sure why there would be a Lego castle model on the desk of a futuristic speeder bike workshop but I'll do it anyway! Maybe it was a antique they found somewhere...lol
Unfortunately the horses of this set are blocky ones, the smoother horses came later on with the grey castles.
These horses wont take long to model as I already have the pieces built, just got to put them together.

I know you'll probably focus a lot more on the "texturing" and lighting etc after you're done modelling, so maybe I shouldn't point it out yet, but I was noticing that the bricks in the ref image look a lot more yellow than you've got them. Also the reflectivity is up quite high it looks like.
Anyway, keep the momentum going! You're right, those horses are made of bricks, I haven't seen them like that before. I guess I only had the grey castles... user added image

Stwert:

I will be focusing on the texture and shaders, and the lighting and rendering more once the modelling is finished, but the yellow used for this is taken from the colour sheet you kindly provided, so I think it's the lighting I've used for now that is changing it a bit at the moment.
Saying that the front cover of the instruction book shows the blocks looking quite orange, it could just be that particular image I posted, other ones show it looking more the colour I've used.
Then again it might just have been the lighting they used to take the photos!
It was from the 70's! lol
I also remember the blocks being quite reflective when I use to have the set, but I think you are right, they are a little too much at the moment, thanks for pointing that out, I'll tone it down a bit on the next render.

Yep, it surely was based on that book. The film is old, cheesy, and not exactly action packed, but it's good for a weekend morning whilst you model. Easy viewing, I'm a fan of many different types of films really, they all have their place and time depending on your mood etc.

Not much of an update on my castle as I've been out for most of the weekend, but this morning I got it sorted so the hinges work the way they are meant to (it folds out into a different looking version) and got the horses modelled too. Just two pieces left to build for the castle itself, which is a little fence piece, and a flag pole. Then it's the figures and the sticker set to go.
Then I'll probably have a bit of a break for a week or so as I've been wanting to do some character sculpts in Zbrush for a while, then I'll get back to some lighting and rendering for the remaining time before the finals date.
